Five Great Parks for Your Family Gathering

First and foremost, there’s not a park in the South Carolina State Park system that isn’t awesome for families. Some, especially the historic sites, are more conducive to a day visit with a small family group. Others, like Hickory Knob, can accommodate large gatherings, dinners and offer a wide variety of activities and accommodations.

Here are five great parks that you should consider when planning your next family reunion or outing.

Paris Mountain State Park, Greenville, SC

Tucked into the hills and trees of Paris Mountain State Park is Camp Buckhorn, a popular location for family gatherings. Camp Buckhorn provides a secluded retreat from the hustle and bustle of nearby Greenville.

Overlooking a private lake, the lodge at Camp Buckhorn is one of the oldest buildings in the park. Built in the 1930’s as a camp for underprivileged children, the lodge provides a panoramic view of Lake Buckhorn and features a large fireplace and a full kitchen. With its large common areas and unique location, Camp Buckhorn is ideal for family reunions.

During your visit, you may find yourself lounging in a rocking chair on the porch of one of the ten cabins included with the lodge, roasting marshmallows over a bonfire at the large fire ring or tossing a football at the grassy area next to the lake. Or you may just sit back, kick up your feet, and catch up with family and friends while enjoying the great outdoors.

Chester State Park, Chester, SC

Centrally-located between Columbia and Charlotte, quaint Chester State Park is ideal for a medium-sized family gathering. The park includes a community building with a kitchen, and several other open air picnic shelters.

Chester State Park is a hidden treasure with lots to do including camping, fishing in the park lake, boat rentals, a playground, hiking/nature trails and an archery course.

Santee State Park, Santee, SC

One of the larger parks in the system, Santee State Park is an ideal location for a family reunion complete with 30 cabins, over 100 campsites, and a conveniently-located meeting building called the Village Round. The park is also located on the shores of Lake Marion and offers numerous recreational opportunities.

The cabins at Santee are two-bedroom units and are fully-equipped with everything from linens to cooking and eating utensils. The meeting building, the Village Round, is centrally-located to the cabin area and accommodates groups of up to 90 people. The Village Round includes a full-service kitchen and a BBQ grill. There are also several other picnic shelters available for rent on the park.

Givhans Ferry State Park, Ridgeville, SC

Located only about 35 miles from downtown Charleston, Givhans Ferry State Park is an awesome little park for your next family reunion. The main natural feature of this park is the Edisto River that flows through it and provides recreational opportunities such as fishing, canoeing and kayaking.

The meeting building at the park can accommodate up to 100 people and includes a large kitchen and a large porch that overlooks the Edisto River. The park also has two picnic shelters available for family gatherings.

After your event, travel into nearby Charleston for history, shopping and fun!

Myrtle Beach State Park, Myrtle Beach, SC

Looking for a family reunion spot along the Atlantic with sea breezes to cool you all day long? Then look no further than Myrtle Beach State Park. One of our most popular family reunion destinations, Myrtle Beach State Park offers seven picnic shelters, some of which are oceanfront.

Bring the family for a cookout style reunion along the beach. Recreational opportunities and facilities include: fishing from the parks fishing pier, ocean swimming and recreation, a nature trail, an education center, playground and more. The park also has a large campground, five cabins and two apartments available for rent.

If none of these parks are in the geographic area of the state that’s best for your family, we invite you to consider Sesquicentennial, Dreher Island, Table Rock, and the many other parks that would be great locations for your next gathering with your family and friends.
